DOULA Services

Natural and Holistic Approach to childbirth

“When you change the way you view birth, the way you birth will change.” ~Marie Mongan

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy!  You are visiting this page because you are looking for someone to guide you, support you and encourage you throughout the birth of your baby, so that you can achieve a healthy, timely and positive labour and childbirth experience.  As a Naturopathic Doula, I am a trained and experienced professional who assists a woman before, during, and/or after childbirth, as well as her partner and/or family by providing information, physical assistance (pain management), and emotional support utilizing Naturopathic modalities. Research has shown that the provision of continuous support during labour by a Doula is associated with improved maternal and fetal health, shorter labour time, less complications, positive feelings toward the labour and birthing process, reduced need for medical intervention, and shorter hospital stays.

As a doula, I

  • Recognize the birth as a key experience in the mothers life, and protect the woman’s memory of her experience
  • Understand the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for labour and birth
  • Accompany the woman throughout her labour and birth
  • Provide emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, while supporting the natural process of labour and birth
  • Provide information necessary for the woman to make informed decisions
  • Facilitate communication between the labouring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers
  • Allow and encourage the partner to participate at his/her comfort level

Naturopathic tools used for natural pain relief:

  • Homeopathy (learn more about homeopathy here)
  • Acupressure/Acupuncture & Massage
  • Visualization and Relaxation techniques
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Aromatherapy

What makes a Naturopathic Doula different from any other Doula?

As a Naturopath, I combine Doula services with Naturopathic protocols to assist before, during and after labour.  We discuss nutrition, supplementation, and do regular medical check-ups. Pain management therapies used include homeopathy, acupressure, and hydrotherapy.  Naturopaths are trained in the use of homeopathic remedies, acupuncture and can provide supplementation advice.  With a Naturopathic Doula, you can feel safe in the hands of a healthcare professional with the knowledge of the inner working of the human body and the natural physiology of birth.  In addition, Dr. Jessica can address various prenatal and postnatal health concerns such as Candida, Group B Strep, low milk supply, and more.

Doula services include:

***Services are covered for both you and your partner under most extended health coverage plans

-2 Prenatal in-office appointments
-Labour and Birth attendance (unlimited time)
-2 Post-natal appointments (at home, in-office, or telephone)

If a scheduled C-section is in the plan for you, the Birth Doula will not be present at the birth, but can offer you 6 Post-Cesarean Acupuncture sessions in place of your Birth fee.  For women who have had a caesarean section there will be incision pain and later numbness around the scar site. It is important to remember that although recovery will compare to someone who has undergone any kind of abdominal surgery, there will be the additional factor of recovering from childbirth. In other words there will still be afterpains, lochia discharge, breast engorgement and breast-feeding to establish. Acupuncture can increase healing time, increase circulation to the uterus, assist in a healthy closure of the incision, minimize scarring, and reduce the chance of uterine rupture in the event of a VBAC. Acupuncture is particularly effective in helping with nerve damage, reducing inflammation and dealing with localized pain.
